I didn’t intend to do a podcast on the TGOC 2016, however so many people asked for more information on this years event, that the recorder made it out form the bottom of my rucksack and I started this piece, while sitting at the end of Loch Callater below Jocks Road, recognising this was the last wild camp of the trip.

TGOC1
It was a mixed day when I recorded this as you’ll hear. The weather flipping without much warning between, calm, still and even sunny at times to heavy rain and gusts, which if it caught you unawares, would test your tent pitching skills.

TGOC4
On the whole it was a good weather crossing this year, very few issues with cold, snow and rain.
TGOC3

I had some fantastic wild camps and this time I tried to make myself finished each day around 4pm, which ensured there was time to relax, recoup and appreciate the gurgling streams and Skylarks.

TGOC6
However I did come across a few beautiful places which have bee decimated by ‘wild campers’. Why oh why do they think this is acceptable?
TGOC7
However for me, my mind was elsewhere the first few days as you’ll hear. Many people during those few days would ask ‘where are you heading today’ and ‘where have you come from?’. I couldn’t answer either as my head was still full of the domestic stresses I had left behind.

However within a few days, both my body and mind started to work better in sync, and when I recorded this I was actually now ready to ’start’ the Challenge proper.

It has also been a good time to sit and think about the future for The Outdoors Station and our current involvement in the outdoor scene. Technology has moved on, the expectations of the end user has changed and new sources of information is being delivered in whole new ways. So all being well changes are afoot!

Thanks to all participants who took part in this episode.

Music taken fromTweed album ‘The First Weave’ and if you are ever in Scotland do make a point of visiting the Cairngorm Hotel in Aviemore and enjoying a night of foot tapping, rocky goodness.

  1. Thanks Bob, that was an unexpected treat. I think you’re right about blogging and podcasts relative to video. Look forward to seeing what you come up with. Best wishes for the future, whatever it holds.

  2. Hi Bob, good to have you back what with all the turmoil! You are so right about ‘The Amazon Effect’, quick delivery, but backup…….
Podcasts still get a big tick from me, but I appreciate the increasing power of video.
Best wishes to you and your family for the future.

  3. Great to get a pod. Was thinking that you’d got lost somewhere…

    Interesting points.

On the subject of media, I don’t think you should underestimate the impact of the spoken word. In many environments (travelling in particular) video is not really appropriate. In other sectors, pods are becoming more, rather than less significant. In golf for instance, there has been a number of ‘cottage’ podcasts around for a few yeats, but the last few months have seen two or three very corporate offerings hit the scene. And as a rule, these organisations only put money in where they expect it to be useful.

The changing business model is also fascinating. Who’d have thought that it would be by making our own stuff that we can be competitive in today’s market? Shame that so much of our manufacturing capital has been destroyed over the last 30 years in search of a quick buck…

Thanks again for you work on the pods though. Always thought provoking.

  4. Great podcasts. Sounds like you had a stress full year nothing better than a long walk to clear the mind.
Video is definitely the way to go.
All the best in the future.

  5. Hi Bob, nice to see you in Montrose, however briefly.
I am very glad that your “just in case” moment came. I always look forward to your post-Challenge podcasts and are a great source of information . Although I do enjoy seeing videos, I also enjoy the old-fashioned audio podcasts that I can listen to without having to sit at a screen.
    Keep up the good work!
