The Gossamer Gear range of backpacks are now available in the UK from backpackinglight.co.uk and this includes the Ultralight G4 backpack. One for lightweight backpackers everywhere.

With an estimated capacity of 65lt in total but a weight of under 500g, this pack is ideal for those who understand the ethos of ultralight hiking, and know what their needs are relating to pack equipment. Made from 70 denier ripstop nylon and power mesh, it offers one main body pocket and three large mesh pockets for external storage.

This pack is supplied without any back padding system or hip belt. Like all Gossamer Gear rucksacks there is an elastic support system in the back structure which will take most folded sleeping pads on the market. Or you can cut down an old sleeping mat and make your own. Everything about the pack is streamlined and made to suit a specific purpose.

Although capacity is large it isn’t designed to be a heavy load lugger. That said, it will still carry up to a suggested maximum of 15kg. I would aim it keep it 12kg or less from experience, but needs must on a trip.

As it is supplied in a simple form it will therefore pack up small in your travel luggage so when you get where you want to be, you’ll have a pack ready to go with you into the wilds. Made to the same consistent high specification of all the Gossamer Gear packs and for those who appreciate the design and workmanship which goes into this specialist area of the outdoor industry.

  1. I made my own G4 pack pattern and materials bought from Quest outfitters.

I made the pack over, the course of two weeks and took it on a week long backpacking trip in the fall The Silhouette trail in Killarney provincial Park. My base weight was 10 lbs, with a total pack weight for the week of 20 lbs.

Yes a large neoair will fit in the pack as long as it is deflated (duh) and folded in half twice. It fits nicely inside the pack along the back< closest to your body. Due to ease of puncture I would not put the neo air into the external pad sleeve, this is where I put my foam sit pad. Worth the extra weight, keeping your bum warm and dry can not be overrated.
