How to use iTunes
Firstly iTunes is free for both PC’s and Mac and is available from the Apple website.
Designed originally as a way to compress your CD collection into MP3 format for loading onto your iPod, it has developed over the years into a very powerful resource machine for on-line entertainment in the form of Podcasts.
If you click on the ‘iTunes Store’ you have the ability to search (top right hand corner) for content, such as artists, albums, TV programs and films to purchase and download for a fee.
Whatever title you search for, the result will no doubt include a podcast with a similar title and this will appear under the heading ‘Podcast’.
By clicking on this section, you will find a wealth of free content which will be instantly available for download onto your PC. This you can play later or transfer to your portable media player.
 For example search for ‘Outdoors Station’ and you will see the following result (shown on right) appear in the window. Now you just click the ‘subscribe’ button for the full listing, which will look something like this;

But like most things on the computer these days, there is more than one way of doing this.
Another way is to copy and paste an XML line into your iTunes software. (An XML line looks like a website address and ends in .xml just like the line above on this page)
Do be aware that you control how many downloads you get from the various podcasts you receive so your machine doesn’t become choked with unwanted programmes which will take up space.
On a PC this menu can be found in Edit > Preferences > Podcasts, or on a Mac this can be found in iTunes > Preferences > Podcasts. You now can choose automatic updates or just to be notified and select the programme you wish to select.
Most podcatching software like iTunes has very similar features. Some more simple, some more elaborate. Do have a look on our software links page to see which one is right for you.
