The health of the nation is falling rapidly well below previous years and a new Government report indicates our children and grand children could be doomed unless we encourage regular activity soon. Walking is such a simple past time and in this podcast we celebrate the simple pleasures gained from it within the social environment of the Malvern Hills Walking Festival.

In this podcast we look at the recent Parliamentary report which has just been released (below) indicating the potential health future facing our children and grand children. It is something all intelligent people are aware of, and yet we all allow the pressures of modern life to prevent us from doing something so simple and so rewarding on a regular basis.

We also recognise that we need to be more active and so decided to join in with this year local walking festival on the Malvern Hills, which takes place every year over a the May Bank Holiday.

Rose tackles the 31 mile Worcestershire Way in a day, whereas I chose the more local Fields of Gold as a contrast.

She set out of a fine warm sunny day with a good 20 people on the early morning bus (provided).

It was a long day but very rewarding, especially the pint at the end satisfied in a job well done.

WW-End

The walk I did was more social and I wanted to see the contrast in the people who joined in. Sadly the weather was not good and as it was the end of the festival I suspect quite a few people had already left the area. Sadly it wasn’t as well attended as Rose’s walk.

Ray-RobertsSAt the end I also chat with festival organiser Ray Roberts about the trends and development of putting together a local festival for the last 10 years. The type of people who visit and what they get from the event

The work is done mostly on a voluntary basis, with numerous volunteers leading 40 walks during the 2104 event. Some local and short, other more elaborate.

Not all walks are strenuous, there’s a wide diversity of interests looking at history, flora, geology just as much as the views.

Don’t forget the program for each years event goes live at midnight on New Year Eve and booking can be made here.

See you on the hills next year 🙂
